24th September 2015- Fitzroy Crossing to The Bungle Bungles

Early morning at Fitzroy River Lodge & Caravan Park.  Plenty of room here even when it is busy as it is a huge park area with cabins and an excellent camp kitchen.  They even have a pool which campers can also enjoy.  I had a very refreshing dip there.

We had stayed at Fitzroy Lodge before on our trip around Oz.  It is a lovely park and we were happy to have had the chance to stay here again but today our objective was the renowned Bungle Bungles over which I had flown in a small plane on our last visit but today we were actually driving into The Purnululu National Park to view them from the ground!  We were very excited. So once again we packed up and hit the road.

The road into the National Park was very rough, very corrugated and very long.  We also had to negotiate several creeks.

The start of the Bungle Bungles

We arrived around midday and decided to do some sight-seeing before finding a camping site so we made our way to the Cathedral Gorge.  It was very exciting to see the Bungle Bungles from the ground after viewing them from the air on our last visit to the area.  They are fascinating being so different from other landscapes that we had seen.  The Bungle Bungles is a very large area of unusually shaped formations.  They reminded me of enormous bee-hives!  They were formed by the land moving over millions of years.

Next we set about finding a campsite for the night as it would soon be dark. We had obtained a permit for camping from the Ranger's Office at the entry to the National Park.  We found the Walardi Camp where we stayed for the night.  The only facilities were bush toilets.

Walardi Camp - Must be getting cool - Tezza has his jacket on!

There were other campers at the campsite but there was room for everyone
