22nd September 2015- From Broome back onto the Gibb River Road to Windjana Gorge

On Tuesday morning we packed up early and headed off back to Derby and onto the Gibb River Road again to finish exploring the western end of the Gibb which had been interrupted by our breakdown earlier in the month.

Much of the western end of the Gibb River Road has been sealed making travel much easier.  In fact they were still working on it.

We turned off on the track heading to Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek and which then joins up with the Great Northern Highway.

A lovely camping location

The National Parks camp site at Windjana Gorge has good facilities although once again they are basic.  The shower blocks are fairly new but do not have doors.  Each shower cubicle has a shower curtain but as I discovered they are pretty useless when it is windy as the blocks are open top and bottom to the elements.  Still we had hot water once again and for that we were very thankful.  The toilets also are new.

Payment is made at the entrance in the form of an honesty box and is very cheap.  A ranger patrols in the evening to check that the stickers provided when you pay are displayed on your vehicle.

Sundown - Waiting for the bats to fly through the Gorge - spectacular

Wikicamps website has been invaluable to us while travelling and camping and once again the comments left by fellow travelers came in very useful.  One wrote that if you walk down into the gorge at dusk, you could see hundreds of bats flying low over the water to catch the insects hovering just above the surface.  You can then enjoy the spectacular show as the freshwater crocodiles leap out of the water to catch the bats.  It was an amazing spectacle and one of the many highlights of our trip.
