23rd September 2015 - Windjana Gorge to Tunnel Creek and Fitzroy Crossing

Another lovely sunny morning and we were up early to walk the gorge - it was beautiful with high rocky cliffs of many colours on either side.  The entrance was through a narrow cleft in the rock wall.

Hope this boulder doesn't fall!

On the track leading from the campsite, we were amazed to see the following sight.............Good on ya, Telstra!!!

At the entrance to  Windjana Gorge - a Telstra kiosk!!

Next stop was Tunnel Creek - Terry was still unsure whether he would venture into the the tunnel through which the creek runs - it is very dark and a good torch is essential. He had originally stated that there was no way he would venture in but he knew I was keen to walk the creek.  I decided I would try and tag along with other intrepid adventurers!

(known locally as Chicken Rocks because that is where many tourists
"chicken out" from entering the tunnel

Tezza's no chicken - he made it!!!!

BUT IT GETS DARKER ....................................

Linnie in the creek - Watch out for the freshies!

Tunnel Creek is well-known as the hiding place for Jandamarra - the Aboriginal freedom fighter.

Jandamarra

Tunnel Creek is part of the brave history of the Aboriginal people at the time of European settlement in the 1890s. Jandamarra, a heroic freedom fighter, used the caves and the Napier Range as hideouts from police.

The touching story of Jandamarra, a skilled Aboriginal tracker who adopted guerrilla tactics in an attempt to hinder the spread of white settlement, is one of violence and sadness. It is best imagined within the majestic milieu of Tunnel Creek.

About half-way through Tunnel Creek there is a roof collapse allowing daylight into the tunnel but this is round a bend so the light does not filter into the main tunnel.  There are freshwater crocodiles in the creek which obviously you try to avoid, but being almost pitch dark for most of the walk this is not always easy.  However, they generally like to avoid humans too!

Take a look at the next two photos of the entrance to the carpark at Tunnel Creek and the main track from the Gibb River Road to the Great Northern Highway - 124km with next to no traffic - and then see my comment below..........

On leaving the Tunnel Creek carpark, I was amazed to see a STOP SIGN before you enter the "main road"  -  it is dead straight in both direction with hardly any traffic so why is there a Stop sign? - amazing!!!
