20th September 2015 - Kooljaman to Broome via Lombadina, Beagle Bay, Quandang & James Price Point

Sunday 20th September 2015

We packed up and were just about to drive out of the campsite, when our friend from yesterday evening came over with some freshly baked brownies for our journey.  Once again they were baked in her Webber and once again they were delicious. We headed south to Lombadina and then on to Beagle Bay - both aboriginal mission settlements.

By this time we were running low on fuel but planned to fill up here at Beagle Bay where we had been assured that petrol/diesel was available but unfortunately nobody thought to tell us that the fuel stop was not open on Sundays - and which day did we happen to arrive in Beagle Bay??? .......Sunday of course!   So we crossed our fingers and drove on.  We had planned to stay the night at James Price Point but as we traveled south it became obvious that we were not going to make it.  The empty light came on and we pulled over to see if we could buy diesel from some workers stopped beside the road but they didn't have any.  With approximately 30 to 40km to go we decided to drive on to Broome and realised that a long, hot walk in 30+ degrees C was a distinct possibility.  We drove on very steadily and sighed with relief when we finally pulled into a servo in town.  (At least we know how far the Triton will go once the fuel warning light comes on!)

After an ice-cream at Macca's - very refreshing on this very hot day, we turned around and headed back onto the sand road north, back up to the turn-off to James Price Point.  A gas terminal had been proposed for this area and had met with a lot of opposition from locals and their supporters.  There was still a lone protester keeping vigil when we finally drove along the sandy track to Quandong & the onto James Price Point.  After exploring the area, we decided that camping here in scrub was not the best option and as Terry had seen what he wanted to see, we headed again back to Broome and booked into the caravan park.

We arrived back at the same caravan park in Broome after a very long and eventful day.
