15th & 16th September 2015 - Broome to Middle Lagoon, Dampier Peninsular

15th & 16th September 2015  - Broome to The Dampier Peninsular (Middle Lagoon)

We were up early to pack up and take the car in for a service.  The shocks needed replacing after all the rough roads even though they had been renewed just before we left home.  The work was all finished early and we hit the road north ..........road??????  sorry.... wide sand track!

The main road north

Make sure you close the windows when you see a truck coming

And some vehicles didn't make it!

Sorry about the thumb print but Tezza wouldn't stop and it was a bumpy road!

Our first stop was Middle Lagoon - a beautiful place.  The road in off the "highway" was a bit rough but certainly worth the journey.  There were only a few campers so we were able to claim a magnificent possie on "the ridge" which overlooked the beach - fantastic!  The aboriginal manager here, Herbie was very friendly and helpful with a great sense of humour.  The facilities once again were basic but clean with plenty of hot water.  There were also modern cabins available for non-campers.

The Dampier Peninsular is Aboriginal-owned so there is a charge for visiting the beach areas unless you are paying for camping.  We had a smile at the Day Visit sign at Middle Lagoon - the $10 charge includes a quick look, quick drive and a quick swim!  The charges vary from place to place but most were reasonable (the above charge was $10 per vehicle) but there were some higher charges such as at One Arm Point where no camping is allowed and they also charge per person!  We declined to visit their beach considering it a rip-off!

We spent 2 nights at Middle Lagoon but would have happily stayed longer but the wind came up and we were pretty exposed on the Ridge.

MIDDLE LAGOON

Very relaxing

On the Ridge - about 8m above the beach

BBQ's provided!

After dark our neighbours gave us a call to bring our torches and come and see the area around us - the whole area was covered with a mass of small crabs of many different kinds.  They were fascinating - all our footprints had disappeared under the mass of crab trails - by daylight the crabs were gone!  Unfortunately the still pictures are not particularly good and videos cannot be added to this blog.

Fabulous Sunsets at Middle Lagoon

Day 2 at Middle Lagoon was spent exploring the nearby headland and beaches, swimming and generally relaxing.  From the headland we spotted whales in the distance!

Walking on deserted beaches

What a beautiful campsite!
